The Kingsford Smith Cup is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The race has been run at both Doomben and Eagle Farm race courses over the years and was upgraded to a Group 1 race in 2006. This upgrade has led to an influx of quality interstate raiders competing each year.
The majority of the runners engaged in the Kingsford Smith Cup head to Queensland’s richest race, the Stradbroke Handicap a couple of weeks later.
The 2023 Kingsford Smith Cup will be run on Saturday 27th May at Eagle Farm racecourse. The total prize money is $1,000,000.
The Top Contenders
Here are three horses that look to be great chances of winning this year’s race.
1st Pick – Private Eye was run down in the shadows of the post in Australia’s richest race, The Everest last October and is aiming to go one better this year in the big race. His Everest campaign will begin in Brisbane where he races well and he always acquits himself well in his races. His first-up run in the Group 2 Victory Stakes was sound and sharp improvement is expected as the Joe Pride trained 5yo moves his way into the Group 1 features during the Winter carnival.
2nd Pick – Vilana is a beautifully bred 4yo stallion racing out of the Godolphin mega stable. He was an outstanding winner of the Group 3 Theo Marks first-up despite the pattern of racing not suiting his style and as a stallion a Group 1 win would be invaluable to his after-racing prospects. He was less than 3 lengths off the winner in this race last year and has improved since then. Expect him to be in the finish this year.
Roughie – Prince of Boom put in a great performance when leading and holding on for 3rd in the Group 2 Victory Stakes. It looks a great local chance at juicy odds. He has won at Eagle Farm before and won the G3 Gold Coast Guineas over 1400m last year. Robert Heathcote is an outstanding local trainer and all of his horses must be respected over the carnival.

Conclusion
The Kingsford Smith Cup has proven to be a hard race for punters with only two favourites winning since the race was upgraded to a Group 1 in 2006. When you consider that the two favourites were the superstar BLACK CAVIAR ($1.14F in 2012) and cult hero APACHE CAT ($1.30 in 2008), the race has actually been a punters graveyard!
The distance of 1300m is an awkward one. The sprinters can find the race too long and tire late, while the middle distance stars only warm up when it’s too late! This year’s race promises to be another exciting race with a host of winning chances.
