1. A school-aged Thai soccer team and their 25-year-old coach is rescued from a flooded cave
Thanks to an international team of divers, 12 Thai schoolboys, and their 25-year-old coach were all rescued from a flooded cave. A mission which took 18 days to carry out as the boys were stuck several miles inside a flooded network of caves and none of the boys were competent swimmers. In order to extract the boys and their coach, two divers were assigned to help each individual who was fitted out with a full face snorkel mask, swim out of the cave system. A feat which took 8 hours per child rescued as some sections of the cave were incredibly narrow, with one section measuring just 18 inches wide.
While all 12 Thai schoolboys and their coach were eventually rescued after spending weeks in a cold, dark cave, one Thai navy seal lost his life trying to save the soccer team.
2. New Zealand’s prime minister gives birth
While many international female leaders are mothers, it’s highly unusual for a female head of state to give birth whilst serving as the leader of a country. However, New Zealand’s current Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made international headlines on the 21st of June this year, when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, who she named Neve. Neve is Ardern’s first child.
3. US president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jon Un
After months of negotiations, US president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Donald finally shook hands at a summit which was held on Sentosa Island on the island nation of Singapore. The two influential world leaders sought to talk about the possible denuclearization of North Korea.
4. Prince Harry marries former American actress Meghan Markle
On the 19th of May, Prince Harry married his American love, “Suits” actress Meghan Markle. Since marrying into the royal family Markle has attended a wide variety of royal functions and has even accompanied the Queen on a train trip to Cheshire, which was a privilege as few royals are invited by the Queen for trips on the Royal Train. As an example, Prince Harry, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are yet to be invited to accompany the Queen on a trip on the Royal Train.
5. Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupts unexpectedly
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano which is located on the island of Maui erupted in May 2018. As a result of the eruption which lasted several months, lava poured through fissures on the island and destroyed countless homes. Which in turn forced thousands of Maui residents and holidaymakers to evacuate the island, which is a popular tourist destination. Unfortunately, some residents refused to evacuate the island and lost their lives as a result.
