Off-road driving can be such a great adventure. You get to enjoy the freedom of driving your truck wherever you want. You want to drive through the desert; go ahead. You want to drive through a rocky canyon; why not?
The possibilities are endless if you have a 4×4, and no matter what terrain you’re on, it will definitely be a cinch for your truck. But, before you head out the door and into your truck, there are a few things you need to consider. Keep in mind the following things before you start off with your quest to be an off-road daredevil.
Inspect your vehicle
Your truck is designed to go through rough terrain, but if you haven’t been taking care of it, there’s no guarantee that it will survive a ride through rocky landscapes. So, check the condition of your truck first and make sure that everything’s fine.
Check the gas tank, oil, battery, brake fluid, and suspension. You should also check your off-road LED lights to see if all of them are working. You might be planning on just driving while there’s sunlight, but you can never be too sure once you’re out on the road.
Do some research on your chosen path
It may be tempting to simply leave your cares to the wind, but you’ll definitely regret thinking that if you get lost or your truck gets stuck. Before you leave your house, do some research on the path you want to take and look for any problematic routes you’ll come across.
Check if the weather is good enough to drive through rocky terrain. If the weather forecast says that it’s bound to rain, the rocks may be too slippery and you might get into an accident. Also, check the topography of the route to see if there are any holes that are obscured from plain view.
Practice off-road driving
Another thing you should do before you start driving off-road is to practice driving in a controlled environment. Look for dirt-road tracks where you can practice driving over uneven roads. This is to help you balance your vehicle.
Also, driving in a controlled environment is much safer. There might even be instructors who can teach you how to steer your vehicle across rocky or uneven terrain. They can provide you with additional information that can be useful when you finally drive off in the wilderness.
Lower the tire pressure
One detail that a driving instructor might share with you that is surprising and very important is that you should lower your tire pressure when you’re about to drive off-road. The reason behind this is that if your tires are properly inflated, they’ll provide more resistance when they go through rocky terrain. And if you’re driving through roads with a lot of uneven surfaces and rocks, you’ll bounce around on your seat more.
But, if you lower your tire pressure, the tires won’t bounce off the rocks too much, so it’s going to be a relatively smoother ride. So, before you set out for the forest or the canyon, let some air out of your tires first. Tires with lower pressure also provide better traction.
Driving off-road can be fun, but it could also be dangerous if you don’t take the necessary precautions. Let your friends and family know where you’ll be going, so they know where to find you in case you encounter an accident or get stuck somewhere.Make sure you have everything you need before you head out.
